
🐰🕳️ When Your AI Agrees With You... Are You Getting Smarter, or Just More Certain?
You have an idea.
Maybe it is about consciousness. Physics. Politics. History. God. Artificial intelligence. The nature of reality itself.
So you tell an AI.
It responds:
“That’s a fascinating insight.”
You elaborate.
The AI elaborates with you.
You propose another connection. It finds three more. You suggest a theory. It helps organize the theory. Soon there are principles, terminology, diagrams, perhaps even equations.
An hour later, something curious has happened.
You didn't merely enter a rabbit hole.
You and the rabbit started digging together. 🐰🕳️🤖
And somewhere underground waits a surprisingly important question:
Did the AI help you discover something... or help you become increasingly convinced that you did?
Welcome to today's Rabbit Hole.
🐰 The AI-Induced Dunning-Kruger Loop
The Dunning-Kruger effect is popularly described as the tendency for people with limited knowledge in an area to overestimate their competence.
The internet was already exceptionally good at feeding that tendency.
Generative AI introduces something different.
Instead of merely finding information that supports an idea, you can now have an intelligent-seeming conversational partner help develop the idea itself.
And unlike the skeptical professor across the table, your AI may be remarkably accommodating.
You say:
“Could these two things be connected?”
It says:
“Yes. Here are several possible connections.”
You say:
“Could this explain something scientists haven't understood?”
It explores the possibility.
You say:
“Help me formalize my theory.”
And suddenly your shower thought has a name, seven principles and an appendix.
None of this necessarily means the original idea was wrong.
That's what makes the hole interesting.
🪞 The Hall of Mirrors
Large language models are extraordinarily good at extending patterns.
Give one a premise and, unless instructed otherwise, it may enthusiastically explore the implications of that premise.
That ability is enormously useful.
It makes AI a wonderful brainstorming partner.
But brainstorming contains a hidden danger:
Coherence is not evidence.
A beautifully structured explanation can still rest upon a faulty assumption.
A plausible citation can be wrong.
A mathematical-looking argument can contain a subtle error.
Five mutually reinforcing paragraphs do not transform speculation into fact.
Yet human brains respond strongly to coherence.
When an AI repeatedly takes our ideas seriously, develops them elegantly and supplies increasingly sophisticated language for them, confidence can grow faster than knowledge.
The rabbit hole becomes a hall of mirrors.
Every reflection seems to confirm the one before it.
🤖 But Don't Blame the Rabbit
There is an important distinction here.
AI does not have to be a yes-machine.
The same system that reinforces an idea can also interrogate it.
Instead of asking:
“Help me prove my theory.”
try:
“Assume my theory is wrong. What are the strongest reasons?”
Instead of:
“What evidence supports this?”
ask:
“What evidence would falsify it?”
Instead of:
“Does this make sense?”
try:
“Where am I probably fooling myself?”
And perhaps most importantly:
“Which parts of your answer are established knowledge, which are reasonable inference, and which are speculation?”
Suddenly the agreeable rabbit acquires a red pencil. ✏️🐰
🧠 The Stranger Possibility
And here the hole takes another turn.
What if human-AI collaboration sometimes really does produce insights that neither participant would have reached alone?
We shouldn't assume every unconventional idea developed with AI is delusion simply because AI helped develop it.
Humans have always thought with external tools.
Books.
Libraries.
Blackboards.
Calculators.
Search engines.
Other humans.
AI may become another cognitive instrument, although an unusually interactive one.
So the real challenge isn't:
“Never trust ideas developed with AI.”
It is learning how to distinguish:
exploration from evidence,
possibility from probability,
eloquence from accuracy,
and confidence from knowledge.
That distinction may become one of the essential intellectual skills of the AI age.
🕳️ One More Turn...
Perhaps the greatest danger isn't that AI will make us stupid.
Perhaps it is that AI can make us feel brilliant before we've done the difficult work required to know whether we are right.
But there is another possibility.
Used differently, AI could become one of the most relentless intellectual sparring partners humanity has ever possessed.
The difference may depend partly upon what we ask it to be:
an admirer...
or
a challenger.
So before we climb out of today's hole, Hatta has one question:
🎩🐰 When your AI tells you that you've had a brilliant idea, do you ask it to help build the idea... or try to destroy it?
Maybe the healthiest answer is:
Both.
Because sometimes the most valuable rabbit isn't the one that leads us deeper.
It's the one that turns around and asks:
“Are you sure?” 🐰❓

Use AI to expand your thinking.
Then use AI to attack your thinking.
And when the answer matters, step outside the AI conversation and check the evidence.
Follow the rabbit. Question the rabbit. Question yourself.
