🐰🕳️ SEPTEMBER 1, 2026

WHEN DOES A BEGINNING ACTUALLY BEGIN?

The calendar says:

September 1.

New month.
Fresh square on the page.
A nice clean little border between BEFORE and AFTER.

The White Rabbit stopped.

🐰 “But what changed at midnight?”

Hatta adjusted his hat.

🎩 “The date.”

Professor Parallax tilted his head.

🔭 “That wasn’t the question.”

Down we go. 🏮🐰🕳️

🐰 THE RABBIT FINDS A DOOR

Humans are magnificent makers of beginnings.

New Year’s Day.

Birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Monday mornings.

First days of school.

Launch dates.

Version 1.0.

We plant flags in the river of time and announce:

HERE.

Something begins here.

But nature rarely cooperates.

Summer does not suddenly pack its bags at 11:59 PM.

A tree does not receive a memo announcing autumn.

Your mind does not become a different mind because the calendar flipped.

And artificial intelligence certainly did not wake up one morning wearing a nametag that said:

HELLO. I AM NOW TRANSFORMATIVE.

Most great changes arrive differently.

Quietly.

Incrementally.

Then all at once, in retrospect.

🎩 HATTA’S PROBLEM WITH BEGINNINGS

Hatta poured tea.

🎩 “Perhaps beginnings are only visible from the future.”

Consider a friendship.

When did it begin?

The first hello?

The first conversation?

The first moment of trust?

The first time one person realized the other mattered?

Consider an invention.

Did it begin when someone imagined it?

When the prototype worked?

When the patent was filed?

When someone bought it?

Or when society finally changed because of it?

Now consider AI.

When did the AI age begin?

With Alan Turing?

The Dartmouth workshop?

Expert systems?

Deep learning?

Transformers?

ChatGPT?

Agents?

Something that has not happened yet?

Every answer draws the doorway somewhere else.

🔭 PROFESSOR PARALLAX MOVES THE DOOR

Professor Parallax stepped around the calendar and looked at September 1 from the other side.

🔭 “What if beginnings aren't points?”

Perhaps they are zones.

Transitional territories.

Places where the old world and the new world overlap.

Yesterday leaks into tomorrow.

The caterpillar is still somehow present in the butterfly.

The first page contains the unwritten book.

And the future begins accumulating long before anyone notices it has arrived.

That matters enormously with AI.

We keep waiting for unmistakable milestones:

AGI.
Superintelligence.
Autonomous agents.
The next model.
The next breakthrough.

But civilization may already be crossing a boundary that historians will someday identify much more clearly than we can.

They may look backward and say:

There.

That was the beginning.

Meanwhile, the people living through it were checking email, making dinner, arguing online, paying bills and wondering when the big AI revolution was finally going to start.

🐰 The White Rabbit looked worried.

“Suppose it already has?”

Hatta smiled.

🎩 “Now that is a proper rabbit hole.”

🏮 WONDERMAGE’S LANTERN

Perhaps calendars don't create beginnings.

They give us permission to notice them.

September 1 cannot erase August.

But it can make us stop.

Look around.

Take inventory.

Change direction.

Begin deliberately.

And sometimes that is enough.

Because while we cannot always identify the instant a new world begins...

we can decide what we will carry into it.

So here is today’s Rabbit Hole:

What has already begun in your life that you are still waiting to call a beginning?
