🐰🕳️ AI RABBIT HOLES

🍐 WHAT IF YOU COULD GROW A NEW ABILITY?
Morning in Sapphire City.
Lake Orizon shimmered blue beneath the Ozure Isles.
Sapphire walls caught the sunlight.
Somewhere below the lake, the strange two-dimensional inhabitants of Cave City were presumably going about their two-dimensional business.
And somewhere inside the royal garden...
grew a pear.
Not an ordinary pear.
A Magic Gold Pear.
🐰 The White Rabbit stared through the garden gate.
“Don't eat it.”
🎩 Hatta looked offended.
“I wasn't going to eat it.”
🔭 Professor Parallax raised an eyebrow.
“You're holding a fork.”
Hatta quietly put the fork behind his back.
Down we go.
🐰🕳️
🍐 THE PEAR THAT CHANGES WHAT YOU CAN DO
In the lore of the Ozure Isles, eating the enchanted golden pear grants the eater something extraordinary:
a pair of functional golden wings.
Not a lesson in flying.
Not years of training.
Not an aircraft.
A new capability.
Eat pear.
Acquire wings.
Fly.
🎩 “Efficient,” said Hatta.
Professor Parallax was already scribbling.
🔭 “Also philosophically dangerous.”
Because we humans have spent most of history acquiring abilities the slow way.
We learn.
Practice.
Fail.
Adapt.
Practice again.
Eventually, something that was once impossible becomes possible.
Then technology arrived and began compressing that process.
Want to cross an ocean?
You don't grow fins.
You build a ship.
Want to fly?
You don't wait for wings.
You build an airplane.
Want to remember ten thousand books?
You don't expand your biological memory.
You build a library.
Technology has always been humanity's collection of artificial wings.
And now comes AI.
🤖 THE DIGITAL GOLDEN PEAR
Something peculiar is happening.
A person who cannot program can increasingly create software with AI assistance.
Someone who cannot illustrate can describe a scene and produce an image.
Someone who knows little about statistical analysis can interrogate a dataset.
Someone who speaks one language can communicate across another.
Someone facing a mountain of information can ask an AI to help find trails through it.
Those are not literal wings.
But they certainly resemble the Magic Gold Pear.
Capability is becoming detachable from expertise.
And that changes things.
🎩 HATTA FINDS THE TROUBLE
Hatta retrieved his fork.
🎩 “So everyone gets wings. What's the problem?”
Professor Parallax pointed upward.
🔭 “Knowing how to obtain wings and knowing where to fly are different skills.”
There it is.
AI can extend capability without automatically extending:
wisdom,
judgment,
discernment,
ethics,
taste,
or understanding.
A person can suddenly become capable of producing enormous quantities of text without becoming a writer.
Capable of generating code without understanding software architecture.
Capable of finding arguments without knowing whether those arguments are true.
Capable of creating convincing images without understanding what actually happened.
The wings work.
That doesn't mean the pilot knows where they're going.
🐰 The White Rabbit looked upward.
“Could someone fly the wrong way?”
Professor Parallax smiled.
🔭 “Human history suggests we should consider the possibility.”
🪽 THE AGE OF BORROWED ABILITIES
Perhaps that is one of the strangest things about this moment in AI.
For centuries, tools mostly amplified abilities we already possessed.
The hammer amplified the arm.
The telescope amplified the eye.
The calculator amplified arithmetic.
The computer amplified computation.
But generative AI increasingly appears to lend us abilities that previously required substantial individual expertise.
That boundary is important.
Because civilization may soon contain billions of people walking around with something very much like magical golden wings.
The question won't simply be:
What can AI help us do?
It will be:
What happens when enormous capabilities become available faster than humans learn how to use them wisely?
🔭 PROFESSOR PARALLAX'S PARADOX
Perhaps intelligence has always worked this way.
Nobody builds a mind alone.
We inherit language.
Books.
Teachers.
Culture.
Tools.
Discoveries made by people dead for centuries.
Every human intelligence is already partly constructed from borrowed capabilities.
AI merely makes the borrowing spectacularly obvious.
Maybe the Magic Gold Pear isn't such a strange idea after all.
Maybe civilization has always been a garden where one generation plants abilities for another generation to eat.
🏮 TODAY'S RABBIT HOLE
If AI could instantly give you one ability you do not currently possess, what would you choose?
A new language?
Perfect musical composition?
Advanced mathematics?
Painting?
Programming?
Photographic memory?
Or would you choose something technology has a much harder time providing:
wisdom?
🐰 The White Rabbit backed away from the pear tree.
🎩 Hatta produced a napkin.
🔭 Professor Parallax confiscated the fork.
Some experiments can wait until after lunch.
