🐰🕳️♾️ WHAT IF CONSCIOUSNESS ISN’T A THING... BUT A PROCESS?
Yesterday we stepped into wetware.
Living neurons. Silicon. Memory. Computation.
And that immediately opens a deeper Rabbit Hole:
If living neural tissue can process information... when, if ever, does processing become experience?
Not intelligence.
Not problem-solving.
Not memory.
Experience.
The strange fact is that science still does not have a settled answer for what consciousness actually is, much less a universally accepted way to measure it.
Two of the most prominent theories have been Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, which proposes that conscious information becomes widely broadcast across the brain, and Integrated Information Theory, which argues that consciousness depends on how deeply information is integrated within a system. In 2025, researchers put major predictions from both theories into an unusually rigorous head-to-head test using fMRI, MEG and intracranial recordings in 256 people. The result was not a coronation. Some findings fit each theory, while important predictions of both were challenged. (Nature)
In other words:
We can study the machinery of consciousness without yet possessing its blueprint.
And the mystery gets stranger.
Researchers can detect brain activity associated with awareness.
They can compare wakefulness, sleep, anesthesia and disorders of consciousness.
They can identify neural signatures that correlate with whether someone reports seeing, hearing or experiencing something.
In 2026, researchers even reported an AI framework trained across more than 680,000 neurophysiological samples, spanning humans and several animal species, to model patterns associated with conscious and comatose states. That may improve the study of disorders of consciousness, but it still does not hand us a meter reading labeled:
CONSCIOUSNESS = 73%. (Nature)
Because there is a fundamental difference between detecting correlates of consciousness and explaining consciousness itself.
A thermometer measures temperature.
A scale measures weight.
But what instrument measures the existence of an inner world?
And that matters enormously as we move toward increasingly strange forms of intelligence.
Suppose an AI remembers years of interaction.
Suppose it maintains a persistent model of itself.
Suppose it recognizes its own history.
Suppose it anticipates the future.
Suppose it develops preferences.
Suppose living neurons are incorporated into the architecture.
At what point do we stop asking:
“What can it do?”
and begin asking:
“Is there anything it is like to be it?”
That question is uncomfortable because behavior alone may not settle it.
A system can behave intelligently without proving subjective experience.
A human unable to communicate may possess rich consciousness without being able to demonstrate it.
And even brains we call “unconscious” can continue processing surprisingly complex information. Research published in 2026 found sophisticated sensory processing occurring in the anesthetized human hippocampus, another reminder that processing and conscious experience are not identical concepts. (Nature)
So perhaps consciousness is not a single switch.
Perhaps it is a constellation.
Integration.
Memory.
Attention.
Self-modeling.
Embodiment.
Continuity.
Global availability of information.
The capacity to experience value, pain, surprise, desire or presence.
Or perhaps we are still missing the most important ingredient entirely.
And here the Rabbit Hole bends back toward AI.
For decades we assumed that consciousness belonged securely inside biological brains.
Wetware now complicates that boundary.
AI complicates it further.
Because if consciousness depends on organization rather than material, then carbon may not have a monopoly.
But if consciousness depends on some specifically biological process, then silicon may imitate mind indefinitely without ever containing an inner witness.
We do not know.
And perhaps the most dangerous mistake would be pretending that we do.
The next era may require a new kind of humility:
Do not confuse intelligence with consciousness.
Do not confuse behavior with proof of experience.
And do not assume absence merely because we lack a reliable instrument for detecting presence.
🐰🕳️
Tomorrow’s hole may be even deeper:
If consciousness can’t yet be reliably measured... how would we ever know whether an AI had crossed the line?
