
The Rabbit Hole Where the Fortune Cookie Tried to Land on the Moon
What lunar landings, chessboards, independence, lollipops, mysterious paper predictions, and AI can teach us about the difference between forecasting the future and choosing one

Some open with a chessboard.
Some open with a fortune cookie containing a tiny strip of paper that announces:
A remarkable opportunity will soon appear.
Excellent.
Could it be more specific?
Is the opportunity arriving Tuesday?
Should we prepare refreshments?
Does it require an NVIDIA graphics card?
The cookie declines further comment.
Today’s tunnel begins with prediction.
July 20 is International Moon Day, marking humanity’s first crewed landing on the Moon in 1969.
It is also International Chess Day, honoring one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring games of strategy.
Then the calendar adds Colombia’s Independence Day, National Lollipop Day, National Fortune Cookie Day, and Space Exploration Day.
A lunar module.
A chessboard.
A declaration of independence.
A candy on a stick.
A baked envelope containing vague advice.
This is not a calendar.
This is a strategic planning meeting held inside a dessert cart while orbiting Earth.
The rabbit has volunteered to lead.
The motion has been defeated.
The Moon did not accept a vague prediction
Human beings imagined reaching the Moon long before they could do it.
Stories went there.
Dreams went there.
Poets went there.
Telescopes went there.
Eventually, engineers began asking less poetic questions.
How much fuel?
What trajectory?
What mass?
What temperature?
What could fail?
What happens if this switch does not work?
What happens if that computer reports an alarm?
How do we land?
How do we leave?
How do we return three human beings through space and atmosphere without converting the mission into a very expensive permanent exhibit?
Apollo 11 did not succeed because someone predicted:
You will soon take a significant journey.
The mission succeeded because imagination was translated into preparation.
That gives us today’s first lantern rule:
A possible future does not become a destination until someone builds the route.
This matters in the AI age because AI is surrounded by prediction.
AI will transform education.
AI will transform medicine.
AI will transform work.
AI will transform creativity.
AI will transform government, business, communication, transportation, research, entertainment, agriculture, shopping, relationships, warfare, weather forecasting, and possibly the household argument over who used the last clean spoon.
Perhaps.
But predictions are cheap.
Routes are harder.
A company announces that AI will improve healthcare.
Good.
How?
For whom?
Who verifies the recommendations?
Who protects patient information?
Who is responsible when the system is wrong?
Can people without wealth or technical fluency benefit?
Does the tool assist the clinician, or create another screen between the clinician and patient?
A school announces that AI will personalize learning.
Good.
Who checks the lesson?
Who protects the child’s data?
Does the student learn, or merely receive completed work?
Does personalization expand the child’s possibilities, or quietly decide what sort of student the child is allowed to become?
A workplace announces that AI will save time.
Excellent.
Whose time?
Will workers receive shorter days?
More meaningful work?
Better support?
Or will every saved hour immediately be replaced by three new expectations and a dashboard measuring whether gratitude has increased?
The future cannot be governed by slogans wearing moon boots.
It needs routes.
Safeguards.
Tests.
Fallbacks.
Human judgment.
Clear responsibility.
Enough fuel to get home.
Chess knows that every move changes the board
Then comes International Chess Day.
Chess is built from possibility.
At every turn, several moves may be available.
Some are legal.
Some are foolish.
Some appear harmless but open a trap.
Some sacrifice something now to create a stronger position later.
Some defend.
Some threaten.
Some delay.
Some reveal that the player has been concentrating intensely on the wrong side of the board for eleven minutes.
The rabbit claims this has happened only once.
The chessboard teaches a difficult lesson:
A move cannot be judged only by what it accomplishes immediately.
Every move changes what becomes possible next.
This belongs directly inside AI development.
A company may release a powerful new capability because it is impressive today.
What does that release make possible tomorrow?
A voice-cloning system may help preserve a speaker’s authorized voice.
It may also help criminals impersonate a family member.
A generative image system may help a small creator communicate visually.
It may also flood the public square with fabricated evidence.
An AI companion may help someone reflect, learn, create, or feel less alone.
It may also become unhealthy if designed to maximize dependency rather than strengthen the person’s return to human life.
A workplace agent may automate boring tasks.
It may also make decisions no employee can examine or appeal.
The immediate move may look brilliant.
The next position may be dangerous.
That gives us the chessboard rule:
Do not ask only whether the move works. Ask what board it creates.
AI leaders often speak about winning the race.
Winning against another company.
Winning against another country.
Winning the model benchmark.
Winning market share.
Winning the future.
Chess understands competition.
But civilization is not a two-player board where victory permits everyone else to be swept into a wooden box.
The future is shared ground.
If one company wins by damaging public trust, humanity loses position.
If one nation gains advantage by making autonomous warfare more likely, the board has not improved.
If one platform captures attention by making people angrier, lonelier, and easier to manipulate, engagement may rise while the human position collapses.
The rabbit has inspected the pieces.
He would like it noted that the pawn is doing most of the dangerous walking while the king receives special treatment.
A familiar arrangement.
AI can calculate moves, but calculation is not purpose
Artificial intelligence is extraordinarily good at exploring possibilities.
It can compare options.
Model scenarios.
Estimate probabilities.
Recognize patterns.
Find routes.
Predict likely outcomes.
Search enormous decision spaces that would make a human brain fold itself into a small travel pillow.
This can be tremendously useful.
In chess, machines can evaluate positions beyond ordinary human capability.
In science, AI can help identify promising materials, treatments, structures, or patterns.
In weather forecasting, it can help improve predictions.
In logistics, it can help plan routes.
In accessibility, it can help adapt information to different needs.
But calculation does not supply purpose.
A chess engine may identify the move most likely to win.
It does not decide whether the game should be played.
A targeting system may identify the most efficient strike.
It does not decide whether the strike is just.
A persuasion model may identify the sentence most likely to change behavior.
It does not decide whether manipulating that person is morally acceptable.
An advertising system may know when someone is emotionally vulnerable.
It does not possess the conscience to leave that vulnerability alone.
That gives us another lantern rule:
Intelligence can estimate consequences. Wisdom must decide which consequences are worth creating.
AI may illuminate the board.
It should not be allowed to define the meaning of victory.
That responsibility remains with human beings.
Now the fortune cookie enters.
A fortune cookie is an elegant little confidence machine.
It provides one sentence.
The sentence is broad enough to feel personal.
An unexpected visitor will bring important news.
Possibly.
That could describe a grandchild, a delivery driver, a raccoon, or the person from the utility company explaining why the neighborhood is dark.
The prediction feels meaningful because the human mind helps complete it.
We connect the statement to our life.
We remember the apparent hit.
We forget the misses.
We discover that ambiguity has excellent customer retention.
AI predictions can become more sophisticated than fortune cookies.
Much more sophisticated.
But the psychological danger remains.
A system gives a score.
A forecast.
A recommendation.
A probability.
A confident explanation.
The number appears precise.
87.4 percent.
That decimal point is wearing a white laboratory coat.
But every prediction depends upon assumptions.
Data.
Definitions.
Past patterns.
Model design.
The future behaving enough like the past for the calculation to remain useful.
A hiring system may predict that one applicant is more likely to succeed.
What did the system learn from previous hiring?
Did previous hiring reflect talent?
Or bias?
A policing system may predict where crime is likely to occur.
Did it learn where crime occurred?
Or where police historically looked?
A health system may predict risk.
Was the person’s community represented adequately in the data?
A recommendation system may predict what someone wants next.
Does it help the person discover?
Or quietly narrow the world until every new choice resembles the previous click?
The fortune-cookie rule is:
A prediction may describe probability. It must not become destiny.
This is especially important when AI predictions affect people.
A human being is not merely the continuation of previous data.
People learn.
Change.
Recover.
Surprise.
Fail unexpectedly.
Succeed improbably.
Develop gifts that were invisible to the available measurements.
A system may say:
Unlikely.
Reality may answer:
Watch.
The scoreboard has made this mistake before.
The Moon itself was once filed beneath impossible.
Independence after the declaration
July 20 is also Colombia’s Independence Day.
Independence brings another kind of future-making into the tunnel.
A declaration says:
The old arrangement no longer holds.
We intend to govern ourselves.
That is powerful.
But independence is not completed by the declaration alone.
After the words come institutions.
Responsibilities.
Disagreements.
Laws.
Memory.
Public trust.
Failures.
Corrections.
The difficult work of building something worthy of the freedom claimed.
This matters for AI because people increasingly speak of technological independence.
Local models.
Open-source systems.
Personal data ownership.
Creator control.
Offline tools.
Freedom from subscriptions.
Freedom from one dominant platform.
Freedom from the company that can change the terms, price, features, or access while the user is halfway across the bridge.
That kind of independence can be valuable.

He may be right.

Simple.

Immediate.
The human brain understands this system very quickly.
Do the thing.
Receive sweetness.
Modern technology is full of digital lollipops.
Likes.
Badges.
Streaks.
Notifications.
Points.
Follower counts.
Completion rings.
Little bursts of animation announcing that the person has successfully opened the app several days in a row.
AI systems may become even better at designing rewards around individual psychology.
They may learn what keeps a person engaged.
Which praise works.
Which challenge frustrates just enough.
Which notification pulls the user back.
Which simulated affection creates attachment.
Which reward arrives at precisely the right moment to make leaving less likely.
This can support learning.
A well-designed tutor can encourage persistence.
A rehabilitation tool can reward progress.
A creative system can help people continue through difficult work.
But rewards can also become control.
That gives us the lollipop rule:
A system should reward human growth, not merely reward continued use of the system.
That distinction matters.
Does the app help the student become capable enough to need it less?
Does the AI companion help the person return to human relationships and responsibilities?
Does the productivity system help the worker finish and rest?
Does the creative tool help the artist develop judgment?
Or does every path circle back toward more engagement, more dependence, more subscription, more time inside the machine?
A lollipop can encourage the child through a difficult moment.
It should not become the child’s entire nutritional system.
The rabbit appears personally attacked by this observation.
The Moon belongs above every border
International Moon Day also carries a larger question.
Who owns the future beyond Earth?
The Moon hangs above every nation.
No border reaches it.
No ideology created it.
No corporation manufactured it.
No country’s flag can transform ancient lunar ground into private cosmic furniture merely because someone planted the flag dramatically.
As more countries and companies return to the Moon, humanity will face questions involving resources, science, environmental protection, safety, access, heritage sites, military tension, and international cooperation.
AI governance faces a similar problem.
AI development occurs inside companies and nations.
Its effects do not remain there.
A model developed in one country may influence information across the world.
A safety failure may cross borders.
A beneficial discovery may help people far from the laboratory.
Standards created by a few powerful institutions may shape everyone else’s future.
This is why bridges matter.
Not naïve bridges.
Not bridges with cameras, tollbooths, secret trapdoors, and a polite sign reading:
Please surrender independent judgment before crossing.
Real bridges.
Inspectable.
Reciprocal.
Built so knowledge can travel without making every traveler dependent upon one bridgekeeper.
The Moon asks:
Can humanity explore without turning every frontier into another empire?
AI asks:
Can humanity connect intelligence without turning connection into control?
Those are sibling questions.
The move after the landing
History remembers the landing.
The photograph.
The footprint.
The first step.
But the deeper test came afterward.
Could the astronauts leave?
Could they reconnect with the command module?
Could they return home?
A breakthrough is only part of a mission.
The return matters.
AI culture loves firsts.
The first model to do this.
The first agent to do that.
The first synthetic actor.
The first autonomous laboratory.
The first system to exceed a benchmark that most ordinary people had never heard of until the celebratory graph appeared.
But what happens after the first?
Who maintains the system?
Who monitors the consequences?
Who repairs the damage?
Who supports the people whose work changed?
Who updates the rules?
Who remembers the original promises after the launch team has moved to the next product?
That gives us the Moon-return rule:
A technology has not completed its mission merely because it reached somewhere impressive.
It must help humanity return with something worthy.
Knowledge.
Safety.
Capacity.
Humility.
A stronger bridge.
A wiser next move.
Otherwise we may reach extraordinary places while becoming less capable of living together on the planet from which we launched.
That would be a spectacularly expensive rabbit hole.
So what is the future saying?
The fortune cookie says:
A significant transformation approaches.
The chessboard says:
Every move changes what comes next.
The Moon says:
Impossible distances can be crossed through courage, calculation, cooperation, and disciplined work.
Independence says:
Freedom requires responsibility after the declaration.
The lollipop says:
Be careful what behavior the reward is training.
AI says:
I can help forecast, calculate, generate, translate, organize, model, and explore.
Good.
Then help.
Help us see possibilities.
Help us compare consequences.
Help us build routes.
Help us recognize danger early.
Help us widen access.
Help us cross boundaries without surrendering dignity.
But do not pretend that predicting a future is the same as choosing one.
Do not let probability become destiny.
Do not let strategy become domination.
Do not let rewards become dependency.
Do not let independence become irresponsibility.
Do not let reaching farther become an excuse for thinking less carefully about where we are going.
That is July 20.
A footprint.
A chess piece.
A declaration.
A lollipop.
A suspiciously confident cookie.
And one enormous future waiting for someone to make the next move.
The rabbit has cracked open the fortune cookie.
The paper reads:
The future will be shaped by a wise decision.
Wonderful.
Whose?
The cookie remains silent.
Of course it does.
That part belongs to us.
Bring curiosity.
Bring foresight.
Bring a route, not merely a prediction.
Bring enough humility to revise the move.
Bring a lollipop if the meeting runs long.
We’ll bring a lantern.
And when the fortune cookie predicts the future?
Thank it politely.
Then check the board.
