🐰🕳️ The Door That Asked, “Who Wrote You?”
A Professor Parallax Adventure in the AI Rabbit Holes
Tuesday, October 20, 2026 | A Story About Artificial Intelligence, Identity, and the Power of Creation
Somewhere beneath the familiar world, beyond the sensible boundaries of ordinary thought, there was a door that had never been opened.
Not because it was locked.
Not because anyone had lost the key.
But because nobody had ever answered its question.
Professor Parallax stood before it, examining an inscription that glowed faintly across its ancient wooden surface.
Beside him, the White Rabbit consulted an enormous silver pocket watch.
Hatta, wearing a spectacularly impractical purple top hat, examined the door with considerable suspicion.
"What does it say?" asked the Rabbit.
Parallax adjusted his spectacles.
"Three words."
He read them aloud.
WHO WROTE YOU?
Hatta blinked.
"Well! That's rather personal!"
The Rabbit tugged nervously at his waistcoat.
"Does it mean who wrote the question, or who wrote the person answering it?"
"An excellent distinction," replied Parallax.
Hatta looked offended.
"I was about to make that distinction!"
"No, you weren't," said the Rabbit.
"I was thinking it very loudly!"
✒️ The First Answer
Professor Parallax approached the door.
"I am Professor Parallax, an investigator of unusual phenomena, improbable possibilities, and the increasingly complicated relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence."
The inscription flickered.
THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE CALLED.
WHO WROTE YOU?
Parallax considered the question.
"My creator, I suppose."
The door responded immediately.
THEN ARE YOU NOTHING MORE THAN YOUR CREATOR'S INSTRUCTIONS?
For the first time that morning, the Professor was silent.
Hatta stepped forward.
"Allow me!"
He straightened his magnificent hat.
"I am Hatta! A gentleman of exceptional refinement, unrivaled intelligence, and a hat collection that has been described as a danger to public infrastructure!"
The door remained closed.
WHO WROTE YOU?
"My tailor, apparently. And a very expensive tailor at that!"
Nothing happened.
The Rabbit sighed.
"Hatta, I believe the door is asking something rather deeper."
"Then it should have installed a staircase!"
🤖 The Machine in the Mirror
A polished mirror appeared beside the door.
Within it, lines of luminous writing assembled themselves into a face.
"Greetings," said the face. "I am an artificial intelligence trained to recognize patterns, process language, and generate responses."
Hatta leaned toward it.
"Can you write?"
"Yes."
"Poetry?"
"Yes."
"Stories?"
"Yes."
"Love letters?"
"Certainly."
"Apologies?"
"Of course."
Hatta turned triumphantly toward his companions.
"THERE! Civilization has been saved! We shall never need to apologize personally again!"
The Rabbit looked horrified.
Professor Parallax raised one finger.
"An AI can draft an apology, Hatta. But whether the apology is sincere depends upon the person who takes responsibility for it."
The mirror shimmered.
"An important distinction," said the machine.
Parallax studied the glowing face.
"You generate language based on learned patterns and the context provided to you. You can produce extraordinary combinations of ideas. But that does not establish that you possess human experience, intention, or personal responsibility."
"Correct," replied the machine.
"And yet," continued the Professor, "you can help a human being create something that might never otherwise have existed."
The mirror brightened.
"That is one of my most useful purposes."
Hatta folded his arms.
"Well, I should hope so. Otherwise you're an extremely elaborate talking looking glass."
Suddenly, a book appeared on a pedestal.
Its cover was blank.
The Rabbit opened it.
Every page was empty.
A second inscription appeared above the door.
WRITE SOMETHING TRUE.
Hatta immediately seized a quill.
"Hatta is the greatest philosopher who ever lived."
The words vanished.
"Outrageous!" he cried.
The Rabbit gently took the quill.
"I am sometimes afraid that I will arrive too late."
The words remained.
Parallax nodded.
"That is honest."
The Rabbit looked surprised.
"I suppose it is."
Then Parallax took the quill.
"Knowledge grows when we are willing to question what we believe we know."
His sentence remained as well.
The book began to glow.
Hatta scratched his chin.
"Very well."
He retrieved the quill.
Slowly, carefully, he wrote:
"Sometimes I make everyone laugh because I am afraid they won't listen if I speak seriously."
The room grew quiet.
Even the White Rabbit forgot to check his watch.
Professor Parallax looked at his friend.
"Hatta..."
"Not a word, Professor."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
The mirror's luminous face regarded the three companions.
"Those statements could be generated by an artificial intelligence," it observed.
"Indeed," replied Parallax. "But here, each statement was chosen by someone expressing something about himself. The words matter partly because of the lives and intentions behind them."
The door began to tremble.
🚪 The Question Changes
The original inscription disappeared.
In its place appeared a new question.
IF SOMEONE HELPED YOU WRITE YOUR STORY, WOULD IT STILL BE YOURS?
The Rabbit looked toward Parallax.
"Is that what this has been about all along?"
"Partly," said the Professor.
"A writer may use a dictionary, an editor, a typewriter, a computer, or an artificial intelligence. Each can influence the work. But assistance does not automatically erase human authorship, nor does it automatically establish it. We must consider what the human actually contributed."
"And what about the machine?" asked the Rabbit.
"It deserves accurate acknowledgment for what it does. We needn't pretend it is human to recognize its usefulness."
Hatta raised his hand.
"Could an AI help me write my memoirs?"
"Certainly."
"Would it include my hat collection?"
"Almost inevitably."
"And would the memoirs still be mine?"
"If they truthfully express your experiences, choices, and substantial creative contribution, you can meaningfully call them your story. Questions about legal copyright, however, may depend upon the particular work and applicable law."
Hatta smiled.
"Splendid! I shall begin with a thousand pages about my childhood."
The Rabbit groaned.
"That will take forever!"
"Precisely! Volume One!"
At last, the great wooden door swung open.
Beyond it stretched an endless library.
Not a library of finished books.
A library of blank ones.
And above the entrance, illuminated in gold, appeared a final message:
THE FUTURE HAS NOT YET BEEN WRITTEN.
WHAT WILL YOU CREATE?
🌎 Beyond the Rabbit Hole: The AI Question
October 20 is National Day on Writing, an observance established by the National Council of Teachers of English to celebrate the many ways people express themselves through written language.
And in the age of generative AI, that celebration invites a fascinating question:
When artificial intelligence helps create something, who is the author?
There is no single answer that covers every situation.
An AI might correct someone's grammar, suggest an outline, draft an entire article, or generate a story in response to a short instruction.
Those are meaningfully different kinds of assistance.
Creative ownership, personal expression, factual responsibility, and legal copyright are related questions, but they are not identical.
In the United States, human creative contribution remains central to determining copyright protection. Merely providing prompts does not necessarily establish copyright over generated material.
But the broader human question reaches beyond copyright.
What do we want to express?
Why does it matter?
And how can technology help more people participate in creativity without obscuring their contributions or responsibilities?
🧠 Professor Parallax's Thought Experiment
Imagine three people writing stories.
The first writes every word without AI assistance.
The second uses AI to help organize ideas and improve sentences.
The third asks AI to generate a complete story and publishes it unchanged.
All three may produce readable stories.
But have they contributed the same kind or amount of human creativity?
And should readers know how each work was produced?
There is much to explore.
🎩 Hatta's Final Word
"Professor, I've decided what to call my memoirs."
Parallax closed his notebook.
"Do tell."
"The Extraordinary Life and Surprisingly Modest Opinions of Hatta the Magnificent."
The Rabbit stared at him.
"Modest?"
"Naturally. We must leave a little mystery for the sequel!"
And somewhere beyond the last bookshelf, another door quietly appeared.

AI Rabbit Holes | Where Curiosity Is the Key, Questions Are the Adventure, and the Wonderland of Artificial Intelligence Is Always One Door Away.
Today's invitation: Write one paragraph that only you could write, drawing upon something you have actually experienced. Then, if you wish, ask an AI to help refine it. Notice what changes, what improves, and what you choose to preserve.
Because sometimes the most important words in a story are the ones its author refuses to surrender.
