📅 THE DAY BETWEEN SEASONS
When Does Something Actually End?
August 31.
The last day of the month.
Summer is still here.
And yet...
something has already changed.
The light comes at a slightly different angle.
Evenings arrive a little earlier.
The air occasionally carries that first almost-imperceptible coolness.
Stores have begun changing colors.
Leaves are considering their options.
And somewhere, the White Rabbit is staring suspiciously at a calendar.
🐰
“Summer ends today,” he announces.
Hatta looks outside.
“No, it doesn’t.”
The Rabbit taps the page.
“August ends today.”
“That,” says Hatta, “is not the same thing.”
Professor Parallax adjusts his spectacles.
And just like that...
we have a hole.
🎩 HATTA OPENS THE CALENDAR
Humans adore boundaries.
Monday.
Midnight.
January 1.
Birthdays.
Graduations.
Anniversaries.
Deadlines.
We draw lines across continuous reality and announce:
BEFORE THIS
AFTER THIS
But nature rarely cooperates.
There is no bell that rings across the Northern Hemisphere announcing:
AUTUMN HAS NOW COMMENCED.
The seasons slide into one another.
Summer becomes late summer.
Late summer begins behaving suspiciously like autumn.
One morning you notice the tree outside has changed.
Except it did not change that morning.
It had been changing all along.
🪞 THE PARALLAX VIEW
Professor Parallax draws three lines in the dust.
THE CALENDAR LINE
August ends tonight.
THE METEOROLOGICAL LINE
Meteorological autumn begins September 1.
THE ASTRONOMICAL LINE
Astronomical autumn begins at the September equinox.
Three answers.
All correct.
Depending upon where you stand.
That is the Parallax problem.
We often assume reality has one perfectly sharp boundary.
Frequently, it does not.
The boundary depends upon what we are trying to measure.
🐰 WHEN DID THE CHANGE BEGIN?
Now the White Rabbit asks the dangerous question:
“If autumn begins tomorrow...
when did summer begin ending?”
Nobody answers.
Because there is no single moment.
That is true of many things.
Friendships.
Ideas.
Technologies.
Civilizations.
Careers.
Beliefs.
Markets.
Habits.
Even ourselves.
We often recognize transformation only after enough tiny changes have accumulated to earn a new name.
The name comes later.
The change began earlier.
🤖 AI LIVES IN THE BORDERLAND
Artificial intelligence gives us an unusually vivid example.
People keep asking:
When will AI become transformative?
As though somewhere ahead lies one unmistakable Tuesday afternoon when humanity receives a notification:
Congratulations.
The AI Age has begun.
But what if we are already living through the transition?
A better model may be seasonal.
One capability arrives.
Then another.
Workflows change.
Expectations change.
Language changes.
Institutions adjust.
Children grow up assuming things adults once considered extraordinary.
Eventually historians draw a line.
But people living through the transition rarely get such a clean border.
They experience weather.
🍂 LIMINAL TIME
There is an old word worth keeping:
liminal
It means being on a threshold.
Neither entirely here nor there.
The doorway.
The shoreline.
Twilight.
The final day of August.
Liminal spaces can be uncomfortable because humans like certainty.
But they are also where possibility lives.
Once something has fully become what it is becoming, many possibilities have already collapsed.
At the threshold, several futures remain open.
That makes transition more than an inconvenience.
It makes transition a creative state.
🕳️ THE DEEPER RABBIT
Professor Parallax turns the question toward us.
What are we currently calling “summer” simply because we have not yet admitted autumn has begun?
What habit has already ended?
What idea has quietly become obsolete?
What technology has crossed from novelty into infrastructure?
What relationship has deepened into something for which we do not yet have a word?
What future is already arriving in fragments?
We tend to notice revolutions when someone writes the history.
But revolutions are usually lived first as ordinary Tuesdays.
🏮 WONDERMAGE'S LANTERN
Perhaps the calendar is not telling us:
August is over.
Perhaps it is asking:
What changed while you were busy counting days?
That is a better question.
Because beginnings and endings are often not doors.
They are gradients.
One color becoming another.
One season whispering through the clothes of the previous one.
Tomorrow the calendar will say September.
The trees will not care.
But we might.
And sometimes a line we invented becomes useful precisely because it gives us a moment to notice what reality has been doing quietly all along.
🐰 The White Rabbit closes the calendar.
🎩 Hatta pours another cup.
🪞 Professor Parallax looks toward the trees.
One leaf lets go.
Nobody announces it.
But autumn has sent its first messenger.
🍂
Follow.
Explore.
Understand.
Bring curiosity.
We’ll bring a lantern.
