🐰🕳️ DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE: WHAT IF INTELLIGENCE ISN’T WHERE WE THINK IT IS?
We keep talking about Artificial Intelligence as though intelligence were a thing that lives neatly inside a brain.
Or a computer.
Or a neural network.
But nature has never been especially respectful of our filing cabinets.
Slime molds solve mazes without brains.
Plants communicate chemically and electrically.
Octopus arms perform substantial processing independently of the animal’s central brain.
Colonies behave in ways no individual member appears to understand.
And increasingly, researchers are exploring living cells themselves as components of computational systems.
So here is today’s Rabbit Hole:
What if intelligence is not an object at all?
What if it is an emergent behavior of sufficiently connected systems?
🧠 A brain is a network.
🌲 A forest is a network.
🦠 A microbial colony is a network.
🌎 An ecosystem is a network.
🤖 An AI model is a network.
👥 Civilization is one enormous, argumentative network.
Different substrates.
Different scales.
Different rules.
But perhaps some recurring architecture underneath them all.
That raises a much stranger question.
If intelligence can emerge wherever information is sensed, exchanged, remembered and acted upon...
how many forms of intelligence have we been standing beside without recognizing them?
And what happens when we begin connecting biological intelligence, machine intelligence and human intelligence into systems that have never existed before?
That is where the Rabbit Hole becomes considerably deeper.
Because the future may not belong simply to AI.
It may belong to combinations for which we do not yet have a proper name.
Human + machine.
Machine + biology.
Biology + network.
Network + environment.
And eventually...
systems whose intelligence cannot be located in any single component because the relationship itself is doing part of the thinking.

“Can machines think?”

“What else has been thinking all along?”
