What if one of AI’s greatest discoveries is not something it creates, but something humanity created thousands of years ago... and then forgot?

Today’s Rabbit Hole begins with a strange thought:
Humanity has already written books that nobody alive has ever read.
Not because they are locked in some secret vault.
Not because they were deliberately hidden.
But because enormous pieces of our own written past have been sitting silently in museums, archives, archaeological collections and even inside sealed ancient scrolls, waiting for us to develop the ability to hear them again.
And now...
AI is beginning to listen.

📜 BACK TO THE BEGINNING
Travel backward more than 5,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia.
There, among the civilizations of Sumer and their successors, humans developed one of the world's earliest systems of writing: cuneiform.
Using reed styluses pressed into wet clay, people recorded their world.
Kings and wars.
Gods and temples.
Trade and taxes.
Astronomy and mathematics.
Medical treatments.
Legal disputes.
Letters.
Prayers.
Myths.
Schoolwork.
Lists of sheep.
Yes, apparently bureaucracy discovered writing almost immediately. 😏
Thousands of years later, enormous numbers of these clay tablets survive.
And here is where our Rabbit Hole widens dramatically.
A UC Berkeley CuneiTranslate project reports that more than half a million cuneiform tablets remain untranslated in museums around the world, while only a relatively small community of specialists can read the ancient scripts and languages involved. The project has explored neural machine translation as a way to help scholars process this mountain of material at greater scale.
Think about that for a moment.
Half a million untranslated tablets.
Not half a million missing tablets.
Not half a million hypothetical tablets.
Tablets we already possess.
Artifacts sitting quietly on Earth today whose messages may not have been understood since the ancient people who wrote them were alive.
There could be mundane grocery lists among them.
There could be forgotten poems.
Unknown prayers.
Business correspondence.
Historical records.
Versions of myths we have never encountered.
Descriptions of events for which we currently possess only fragments.
Perhaps even answers to questions scholars have debated for generations.
We simply do not know.
Because...
we haven't read them yet.

🔥 THEN VESUVIUS BURIED ANOTHER LIBRARY
Now leap forward thousands of years.
79 CE.
Mount Vesuvius erupts.
Pompeii and Herculaneum are devastated.
Among the casualties is an extraordinary collection of papyrus scrolls at Herculaneum.
The volcanic heat carbonizes them.
And strangely, destruction also helps preserve them.
The result looks less like a library than a collection of burned black cylinders.
Attempting to physically unroll many of them would destroy the very words researchers are trying to recover.
For centuries, the library remained tantalizingly close...
and practically unreadable.
Until computers learned another trick.
Researchers are now combining high-resolution X-ray imaging, computer vision, geometry and machine learning to virtually unwrap these scrolls without physically opening them.
In 2026, the surviving portion of PHerc. 1667 became the first Herculaneum scroll to be virtually unwrapped and read end-to-end, revealing nearly 1.5 meters of continuous text. Other work has recovered extensive passages and previously unknown titles from the ancient collection.
And the library is nowhere near exhausted.
Approximately 600 Herculaneum scrolls remain unopened.
Six hundred.
Waiting.

🧠 AI AS ARCHAEOLOGIST
For years, much of the conversation about artificial intelligence has centered on what AI can create.
Images.
Music.
Stories.
Software.
Video.
Scientific hypotheses.
But perhaps we have underestimated another role.
AI may become one of civilization's most powerful instruments for recovering what humanity has already created.
A damaged tablet.
A faded manuscript.
A sealed scroll.
A fragment of an unknown language.
Writing hidden beneath later writing in a palimpsest.
Letters invisible to the naked eye.
Thousands upon thousands of untranslated texts waiting in collections around the world.
AI doesn't replace the archaeologist, historian, linguist, papyrologist or Assyriologist.
It can give those humans something far more valuable:
leverage.
One scholar might painstakingly study a limited number of inscriptions during a career.
Machine assistance could help scholars search, compare, reconstruct and triage enormous collections, directing precious human expertise toward material that deserves closer examination.
And suddenly...
the unread library becomes a little less unread.
🏺 BUT HERE COMES THE REALLY BIG QUESTION
Imagine combining ancient-text databases from civilizations across the world.
Sumerian.
Akkadian.
Babylonian.
Assyrian.
Egyptian.
Greek.
Latin.
Hebrew.
Sanskrit.
And countless later manuscript traditions.
Now imagine AI systems capable not merely of translating individual texts, but comparing recurring names, places, astronomical observations, myths, genealogies, disasters, migrations and historical events across enormous bodies of ancient material.
Patterns might emerge that no individual scholar could reasonably hold in mind simultaneously.
Some apparent mysteries might disappear.
Others might become considerably stranger.
And inevitably...
new questions would appear.

Perhaps somewhere in a museum drawer today sits a clay tablet containing information nobody living knows.
Perhaps inside one of those blackened Herculaneum scrolls survives a work by an ancient author whose book was believed lost forever.
Perhaps texts we currently know only by title still exist somewhere, unread.
Perhaps portions of humanity's intellectual history have not actually been lost.
They have merely been...
waiting.
🏮 THE WONDER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLE
We often imagine artificial intelligence pointing toward the future.
But this may be one of the most beautiful reversals in the entire AI story.
The machine looking forward...
helps humanity look backward.
Five thousand years backward.
Toward the first scribes pressing marks into clay.
Toward vanished cities.
Toward forgotten voices.
Toward libraries silenced by fire, war, time and language.
And perhaps one day an AI system will identify a sequence of ancient marks, hand them to a human scholar, and somewhere across a gulf of thousands of years...
another human being will speak again.
